VORTEX FORMATION AND DYNAMICS IN SUPERFLUID He AND ANALOGIES IN QUANTUM FIELD THEORY

چکیده

The formation and dynamics of topological defects of different structure has been of central interest in the study of the 3He superfluids. Compared to superfluid 4He-II, the variability of the important parameters with temperature and pressure is wider and many features are more ideal. This has made experimentally new approaches possible. An example is the formation of quantized vortices and other topological defects in a rapid time-dependent phase transition from the normal state to 3He-B. This vortex formation process is known as the Kibble-Zurek mechanism and is one the central topics of this review. It demonstrates the use 3He-B as a model system for quantum fields, with detailed control from the laboratory.

The Physics of Singular Dislocation Structures in Continuum Dislocation Dynamics

Dislocations play an important role in the deformation behaviors of metals. They not only interact via long-range elastic stress, but also interact with short-range interactions; they annihilate, tangle, get stuck, and unstuck. These interaction between dislocations lead to interesting dislocation wall formation at the mesoscales. A recently developed continuum dislocation dynamics model that s...

Positive feedback processes underlying the formation of expertise

Experts may be modeled as managing the inductive dynamics of knowledge acquisition in the knowledge processes of society. Who becomes an expert may be modeled as a random process under the influence of strong positive feedback loops in the social mechanisms giving access to knowledge. These models have implications for the design of expert systems. 1 The Nature of Expertise Expert systems add a...

Nanoscience and the Janus-Faced Character of Simulations

In nanoscience, simulations (partly) take the place of “real” experiments. For example: in a simulation, well-known physical laws can produce surprising behaviors. It is argued that simulations are both part of experimental practice and form a theoretical instrument, inducing a methodological shift in scientific practice: if one desires a “quantitative understanding” of matter at the nanoscale,...

Historical Overview and Classification of Traditional and Digital Learning Objects

Learning objects are physical objects, specifically designed to promote learning through hands-on interaction. They are popular materials in early childhood education, at school and at home I present a historical overview of Learning Objects, starting with John Locke’s educational philosophy and design suggestions, continuing with the approaches of the educational pioneers Friedrich Froebel, Ma...

The all too flexible abductive method

This paper discusses the abductive theory of method (ATOM) by Brian Haig from a philosophical perspective, connecting his theory with a number of issues and trends in contemporary philosophy of science. It is argued that as it stands, the methodology presented by Haig is too permissive. Both the use of analogy reasoning and the application of exploratory factor analysis leave us with too many c...
